"I learned Greek as my first language, but when I was 5, my father decided we’d only speak English at home because he had to learn. And then I started kindergarten in the local school, which further limited my access to the language. My mother didn’t drive, so we only attended Greek school briefly. Over the years, I’d forgotten how to speak Greek. After graduate school, I decided it was time to take Greek classes and re-learn the language. Friends had recommended Anthony’s classes. "I'm close to finishing up my first year (2024/25) with the Institute of Greek Language and Culture, and I'm already excited for next year. Anthony is a very supportive and capable teacher who encourages all of his students to push themselves and be confident in their abilities. The class is reasonably challenging for anyone with a desire to learn Greek, whether you vaguely remember some Greek from childhood or are coming in with no modern Greek background (like me). The program has excellent flexibility for working adults and is a great opportunity to learn a new language and make friends. I look forward to class every week, and I only wish I had signed up sooner!"

"I didn't learn Greek as a child; it was something I did not think was relevant to my life in the United States. As I got older, I felt that I was missing out on communicating with family members here and abroad, so I decided to commit to learning Greek. I tried a language-learning app, but found it difficult to retain what I was learning without proper instruction and regular communication. After one year of classes with Mary at the Institute, I have a better understanding and appreciation for the grammar and evolution of the Greek language. My family members are quite pleased with how far along my Greek has come and my level of confidence in trying to speak with them in Greek after just one year. Taking the class was a game-changer in my learning experience!"
"I'd always wanted to sharpen my Greek and tried every trendy online way of doing so. But the reality is that unless you take a class with someone like Anthony who can help with accent, nuance, context, and the unspoken rules of the Greek language, I really think that the online ways of learning might end up just making you worse off. Anthony's class helped me appreciate the grammar and rules that weren't even mentioned in apps and online courses that are everywhere today. "I have been in Greek lessons for about a year, and it is one of the best decisions I have made! Anthony is able to take one of the most challenging languages and make it easy to understand from the very beginning. From a brand new alphabet to verb tenses, every new challenge in the language has been thoroughly explained and immediately put to use in class and homework. The classes are small, and learning is adapted to the group, so it never feels overwhelming or too fast. Besides learning the language, taking this class has allowed for connections with other like-minded adults, and I personally have made friendships through the course! "I have had the great privilege of being a student of Anthony Xidis for the 2023-2024 Beginners Sessions. I have a Greek wife and after 16 years of marriage, I decided I needed to search out someone to teach me how to speak Greek properly before we both retire to Greece. My experience began as someone with zero knowledge of the language and after 10 months, my Greek vocabulary and knowledge of speaking, reading, and writing Greek has increased tremendously. This is all due to the wonderful teaching style of Anthony, the small class sizes, and the one on one conversations that the students have with each other. "I started beginner classes with the Institute of Greek Language and Culture six months ago, and I can already speak, read, and write Greek! Learning a new language with an unfamiliar alphabet is daunting, but rather than falling back on English spellings for pronunciation, Anthony shows you that jumping in with the Greek alphabet, pronunciations, and spellings is not only possible but a better path to fluency. “When I started taking Dr. Xidis' Greek classes I knew next to nothing. I had tried two different Greek language courses via audio tapes and picked up a few words of vocabulary but could not understand a conversation and was even less able to speak. About all I knew how to say well then was "katalaveno Ellinika" (I don't understand Greek). I took Dr. Xidis' classes for nine years and while I'm not perfectly fluent, I can read, write, speak and understand both written and spoken Greek to the point where I feel comfortable in nearly any situation where Greek is spoken. Most people I meet assume that I have been speaking Greek since childhood but my parents were born here and my dad did not speak any Greek so I didn't learn any growing up. The format is very conducive to learning—you have conversation the first hour then a short break followed by lessons in grammar. Dr. Xidis is a teacher by profession and is very skilled at teaching to make sure students learn and retain key concepts. I really enjoyed the class very thoroughly. The format and times were very convenient for busy professionals like me who often travel or work late. In addition, I made many friends in the class and even met my wife through his class! For anyone looking to learn to speak Greek your investment of time and money with Dr. Xidis will be very well spent. I highly recommend his classes!”
“I have been a student at the Institute of Greek Language and Culture for the past three years, and my experience has been nothing short of outstanding. Over this period, I have had the pleasure of taking classes with both Mary and Anthony. Due to Covid, the first two years of my lessons were conducted online.
